The Altrusa International Club of Sikeston, Missouri, had their annual fundraiser, a large part of the funds going to The House of Refuge for Battered and Abused Women and Children which Altrusa of Sikeston helped to establish contributing well over $100,000 to this important haven. Many members volunteer and also serve on the Board.

School Supplies for Children in Conflict -- Altrusa International, Inc., Club of Richardson, Texas

The Altrusa Club of Richardson, Texas, donated approximately $1,300. worth of school supplies to US troops in Camp Taji, Iraq, for distribution to Iraqi school children as part of Operation Back 2 School which they were hosting.

To celebrate United Nations Human Rights Day, the Altrusa Club of Richardson, Texas, has a clothing drive for New Beginnings a resale shop which uses the proceeds to help women and children who are fleeing abusive environments with shelter, clothing and other services.

Welcome Bags -- Altrusa International Club of Akron, Ohio

Every year the Akron, Ohio, Altrusa Club provides "Welcome Bags" for the local Battered Women's Shelter. These kits contain all the personal necessities (shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.) that women coming to the shelter might need. This year Akron Altrusans provided fifty (50) kits for the Shelter.

White Ribbon Day Literacy Project for Children -- Altrusa International, Inc., Wellington, New Zealand

Each year on 25 November, individuals wearing white ribbons pledge to speak out against violence towards women.

On this day in 2009, the Wellington club launched a project, with the help of the Wellington community, to purchase books. They delivered 170 books to six women refuges in the Wellington region. In addition the Altrusa club purchased approximately 100 to 130 more books. Domestic Violence affects children and can impact on their literary skills.

This isolated township is in a severely deprived, semi-desert and warrior region of Uganda, bordering Sudan. Drought is an ever-increasing problem and HIV is rife.
